Narragansett Chapter, Appalachian Mountain Club,

Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting on March 8, 2015

Present: Bob Tessitore, Ann Piascek, Chris Shafer, Mike Krabach, Greg O’Brien, Linda Pease, Bill Rafferty and Russ Miller

The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. In the absence of the Secretary, Russ Miller was asked to take the minutes.

The minutes of the prior meeting were approved as submitted.

Treasurers Report: Bill’s report was distributed, and he noted that we expect to receive the first installment of our dues allocation from Joy Street next month. Bill noted that we are getting back six cents on the dollar of dues that go to Joy St. Discussion focused on the “Chainsawing protection” item for the acquisition of four sets of personal protective gear mandated by the State. The AMC and the State are in the process of making rules for volunteers’ use of chainsaws. Bill noted that we should soon get reimbursement from the State for our expenses on the Wood River Bridge. We contributed 1,082 hours to the project, more than required to meet our co-pay on the project. Bill also mentioned that he will present recommendations on contracts, especially who has authority to bind the chapter and for what amount. Bill’s report was approved.

Chair’s Report: Bob reported a quiet month. The Fall Gathering preparations are proceeding apace and we are on schedule.

Vice Chair’s Report: a quiet month.

Membership: Gregg reported that the Spring gathering is set for Sunday, May 22. She already has paddle leaders and hike leaders lined up; she will need bike leaders.

Activities: Chris reported on the Rhode Island Outdoor Recreation committee meeting followup - he met with a person from “Shape UP RI” which has modified its status, but will promote the AMC among its employees. As to the health mission of the committee, AMC has its “Outdoor Rx”program, getting doctors to prescribe AMC activities; the State Health Dept is interested in the program. Leadership training program will be held on April 9 and the Wilderness First Aid on April 16-17.

Communication: Mike reported that there are too few activities; Meet-up has many more activities. He discussed how trips need a pin (tie to Google Earth Map) to be approved. He is thinking of moving our site, in whole or in part to the clone site. Mike needs to know if trips were cancelled, so that the record can be accurate.

Conservation and Paddling: Linda reported there will be a paddling meeting on April 10. Conservation projects are being done on an individual basis.

Skiing: Ann reported a problem in getting reports from leaders as to whether particular trips actually occurred and whether there were any incidents. She will work to develop new guidelines for leaders.

Trails: Chris Shafer reported there will be a Trails Committee meeting on March 25. On March 19, several chapter members will assist in trail preparation for the Blackstone Dog park. The pavilion at Arcadia will be rebuilt over the Spring and Summer; work has already been started off-site. The AMC is requiring training of leaders in the use of chainsaws. This may involve substantial expenditures.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40.

Respectfully submitted,

Russ Miller
